Veganuary: plant-based dog food – what really matters?

More and more pet owners are questioning not only their own diet, but also what they feed their dogs. The question is: can plant-based dog food meet their needs – and how can the switch be made in practice?
A recent analysis of seven plant-based dry foods shows that yes, it is possible – if certain criteria are met. Here are three key points to consider:
1. Focus on nutrient profile, not meat content
"Our evaluation shows that a plant-based diet for dogs is fundamentally possible if the food contains all the relevant nutrients. The composition is crucial," explains Dr Christine Jensen, co-author of the study.
This means that it is not the protein source that is decisive, but the complete supply of proteins, essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Balanced foods such as VeggieDog Potato & Pea or VeggieDog Red Lentil from Green Petfood are designed precisely for this purpose – without additional supplementation.
2. Switching step by step
Patience is required when switching to plant-based food. The proportion of the new food should be increased slowly and introduced in a way that doesn’t overwhelm the dog.
A tried-and-tested approach: start with 25% new food, then increase over several days. Ingredients such as potatoes, peas and lentils are particularly easy on the stomach.
3. Consider individual needs
For healthy, adult dogs, plant-based balanced food is an option. For puppies, pregnant dogs, or dogs with special health needs, always consult your veterinarian.
Advice also plays a key role in specialist shops. Dog owners often seek personalized guidance in-store. Transparent information on nutrient profile, feeding recommendations, and target group is therefore crucial.
Veganuary as an easy start
Veganuary does not have to mean a complete change. A meat-free day is a low-threshold test for acceptance and tolerance.
‘Even though Veganuary officially only lasts one month, the impetus for conscious feeding can be used throughout the year,’ says Rafael Rybandt, Head of Brand Marketing at Green Petfood.
👉 Whether you are a retailer looking to use Veganuary to appeal to new target groups or a brand seeking to drive sustainable innovation, Green Petfood shows how the momentum of Veganuary can be translated into concrete solutions for conscious dog nutrition.
